Walaa Refaat credited an Ice Watch, gifted by her English teacher Adel Nabil, with altering the course of her life. At sixteen, assigned to conduct an imaginary interview, she chose her teacher; after a week of preparation, her presentation moved him to give her the watch, which she still owns. The gesture, she says, cultivated a love of English literature she had previously held no interest in.
